What:
I work part time for a crisis pregnancy center. That, in itself, is an eye opener as many of the girls arrive at our doorstep in different stages of desperation. We try to help them with clothing (donated), formula (donated) and other items that are needed to keep their babies safe. We provide an incentive based Parent Education Program, that rewards these moms for attending parenting classes and doing their homework, finishing high school, developing a budget etc... their reward is a "mommy dollar" that they can use to "buy" new items that their baby needs. It builds their self confidence in parenting skills and they are excited to be able to get their baby new items, diapers, bathing supplies and not just used items.
Why:
Many, many of our girls walk to our Center. They are either pregnant, or carrying other little ones. I would love, love, love, the opportunity to offer some of them bus passes to get home after completing a parenting class. We are in PA and our summers and winters can be particularly harsh. We will have extra blankets on hand in the winter to cover the babies and we keep water to help cool down the moms in summer. We had someone donate passes a couple of years ago and it was a Godsend. It would be wonderful to offer these again!
